What Defines the A00 Series

The A00 designation identifies GP Standard transformers wound for a 220/440, 230/460, or 240/480 V single primary 110, 115, or 120 V secondary – the dominant voltage pairing in North American industrial control. All 14 models share the same electrical platform:

  • Dual-wound, fully isolated primary-to-secondary – eliminates common-mode noise on sensitive control circuits
  • Class B (130 °C) insulation standard – suitable for standard panel environments up to 40 °C ambient
  • High inrush withstand – secondary voltage held at ≥ 85% rated during inrush (see regulation data table in Section 3)
  • UL/cUL 5085-2 Listed, UL File E47299 – North American compliance out of the box
  • CE marked, RoHS compliant, REACH compliant – ready for international and European projects
  • Exceeds NEMA ST-1, ANSI, NMBTA, JIC, and IEC standards
  • IEC touch-proof (finger-safe) terminal blocks – safe, code-compliant panel wiring
  • Copper coils for excellent thermal characteristics
  • Heavy-gauge steel mounting plate with 4 mounting slots – fits standard panel-mount configurations
  • Optional fuse blocks (CC-class or slow-blow) – fuse block kits available for easy field installation
  • 50/60 Hz dual-rated – North American and international supply frequencies
  • 10-year warranty – backed by Powervolt Group, Addison, Illinois, USA

Need a different voltage pairing – 600 V primary, 240 V secondary, or 575 V supply? See the Industrial Control Transformers pillar guide for Powervolt Group’s full three-series comparison: GP Standard, GP Econoline, and GP Enclosed.

A00 vs GP Econoline – When to Choose Which

The GP Econoline Series offers a lower initial cost but is only available in 300–1500 VA and uses Class F (155 °C) insulation only.

For machinery with frequent start-stop cycles, VA ratings below 300 VA, or applications requiring Class B insulation, specify the GP Standard A00 Series.

The A00 Series uses heavier copper windings and a higher-grade core for superior inrush performance and longer service life.

How to Size an A00 Transformer for Your Panel

The full sizing methodology – including Powervolt’s regulation data table – is in Section 4 of the Industrial Control Transformers pillar guide. The summary below applies those steps to 480 V A00 applications.

Step 1 – List Every 120 V Load on the Secondary

Identify every device the transformer must power simultaneously: contactor coils, relay coils, PLC power supply, I/O modules, solenoid valves, HMI panels, pilot lights, and timers. Record both steady-state (sealed) VA and inrush VA for each device from the manufacturer’s datasheet.

Step 2 – Calculate Worst-Case Simultaneous Inrush

Identify the start-up sequence where the most coils energise at once. Use Powervolt’s Method A: sum the sealed VA of all loads + sum the inrush VA of all simultaneously energising loads.

(Method B produces a slightly oversized result, which is the safer default for sizing.) Electromagnetic devices – contactors, relays, solenoids – typically energise in 20–50 ms and draw 3–10× their sealed current during that period.

Step 3 – Cross-Check Against Powervolt’s Regulation Data Table

Locate your calculated inrush VA in the table below (at 85% secondary voltage, 40% power factor — the worst-case column). Select the next standard A00 rating whose inrush VA figure is greater than or equal to your calculated value.

A00 VA RatingMax Inrush VA @ 85% Secondary, 40% PF
25 VA160 VA
50 VA270 VA
75 VA435 VA
100 VA655 VA
150 VA1,300 VA
200 VA1,975 VA
250 VA2,680 VA
300 VA3,180 VA
350 VA3,665 VA
500 VA6,300 VA
750 VA10,555 VA
1000 VA15,225 VA

Size to Inrush – Not Steady-State

The most common selection error is calculating only the steady-state load. A 100 VA transformer sized to a 100 VA continuous load will sag below 85% secondary voltage when three contactors energise simultaneously at start-up. Always base the VA selection on the inrush budget using Powervolt’s regulation data table above.

A00 Series Installation Quick Reference

These are the key steps for installing an A00 model. Full installation guidance – NEC code references, grounding requirements, ventilation, and troubleshooting – is in Sections 6 and 7 of the Industrial Control Transformers pillar guide.

  1. Mount on a horizontal surface using the provided heavy-gauge steel mounting plate (4 mounting slots)
  2. Connect the primary tap terminal matching your supply – 220/440, 230/460, or 240/480 V – to the multi-tap primary terminal block
  3. Install slow-blow (time-delay) primary fuses at 200% of rated primary current; optional Powervolt fuse block kits simplify installation
  4. Ground the X1 (neutral) terminal to the panel ground bus per NEC 250.186
  5. Install secondary control-circuit fuses or a breaker at 200% of rated secondary current per NEC Articles 430 and 725
  6. Allow a minimum 25 mm clearance on all sides for natural convection cooling

For the complete wiring guide, grounding options, and first-energisation safety check, see Sections 6 and 7 of the Industrial Control Transformers pillar guide.

GP Standard A00 Series – FAQ

Is the A00 Series suitable for 50 Hz supplies?

When a transformer designed for 60 Hz operation is used on a 50 Hz supply at the same voltage, the magnetic core actually experiences a slight increase in core flux density (not a decrease), because flux is inversely proportional to frequency.

In well-designed transformers such as the GP Standard A00 Series, this increase remains within acceptable design limits, so no derating is required. However, operation at 50 Hz can result in marginally higher magnetizing current, increased reactive power demand, and slightly greater voltage drop due to higher leakage reactance effects. These impacts are generally minor and are already considered in Powervolt’s dual-frequency design margins.

What is the correct primary tap to use for a 480 V supply?

Connect to the 240/480 V tap pair on the multi-tap primary terminal block. The A00 Group also accommodates 220/440 V and 230/460 V supplies — connect to the corresponding tap pair for your available line voltage.

Can I parallel two Standard transformers for a higher VA rating?

Not recommended. Impedance mismatches between units cause unequal current sharing and can overload the lower-impedance unit. Select the next higher standard VA rating from the A00 table instead. If your load exceeds 2000 VA, contact Powervolt Group for a custom solution.

Why choose A00 over the GP Econoline Series?

The GP Standard A00 Series covers 25–2000 VA and offers a bigger core size with Class B (130 °C) insulation — necessary for high-ambient panels and for the smallest VA sizes. The GP Econoline Series covers only 300–1500 VA and uses Class F (155 °C) insulation only. For frequent start-stop duty, or any panel requiring a VA rating below 300 VA, the A00 Series is the correct specification.  See the full three-series comparison in the pillar guide.

Is an enclosed (NEMA-rated) version available?

Yes – Powervolt Group’s GP Enclosed Series is available in NEMA 3R ratings for installations outside an existing enclosure, in washdown areas, or in dusty environments. Primary: 208–600 V. Secondary: 120/240 V. VA range: 250–2000 VA.

Where can I download the GP0025-A00 datasheet?

Each part-number page on powervoltgroup.com includes a direct PDF datasheet download. Go to powervoltgroup.com/part-details/GP0025-A00 and click “View” in the Datasheet column. Datasheets for all 14 A00 models are available on their individual part-detail pages.
